Flying Buttresses
A flying buttress is the part of a cathedral that supports the walls so that the building does not collapse under its own weight. In this group begun by Sarah Councell Turner, people serve as supportive buttresses to others. They do this by identifying persons who have taken unpopular stands for justice or for an important principle, and then writing notes of support and encouragement to them. Not everyone is called to stand on the front lines in the struggle for LGBTQ rights, racial justice, or other controversial issues, but anyone can be an encourager of those who are.
